“What’s special about The Reno Winter Bachata Festival?”
To put it simply, the Reno Winter Bachata is a Latin dance festival with workshops taught by professional instructors, night parties with hours of social dancing with some of the best Latin DJs, and an evening showcase, where dance couples and teams from all over the nation entertain the audience with their energy and creative performances.
However, there is much more than that.
It’s really hard to describe in just a few paragraphs everything that happens during the four days that encompass the Reno Winter Bachata. The only way to fully understand the experience is to come to our festival and experience it yourself. People have told us that our event has changed their lives. From the minute they arrive at the Silver Legacy Resort in downtown, they can fell the positive energy from dancers from all over the world, eager to dance and learn from some of the best in the industry.
Bachata is at the heart of the festival, but we offer a diverse array of workshops and dance parties from other genres and styles, such as Salsa, Cumbia and the now popular Kizomba. We also offer dance workshops for every level, from first-time beginners to advanced. It doesn’t matter if people have danced for years or if they just started last week, we have something for everyone at a level that’s comfortable.
Our festival is a dancer’s haven, where they can dance, learn, socialize, relax, get together for lunch, dinner, a cup of coffee or a drink.
Be sure to check out The LAI teach and perform all weekend long. For the first time ever The LAI and RAW Bachata will be debuting a Social Etiquette lecture. This unique lecture will give you insight on how to become more successful in the social dance scene. Along with their NEW Social Etiquette lecture The LAI will be teaching Rueda de Casino and an Introduction to Kizomba course. Be sure to also check out their late night Rueda de Casino and Rueda Infused Bachata Party that is co-hosted with RI Bachata and Raw Raw Bachata Dance Company.
“What is Bachata?”
Bachata is a Latin genre of music from the Dominican Republic. It has elements of other Latin genres and styles, of which ‘Bolero’ is probably the strongest influence. It is actually very new.
The first bachata artists emerged from the rural areas of the Dominican Republic in the 1950’s. The Bachata dance evolved from this type of music. Bachata songs are often about country living and love, both passionate romance and hurtful heartbreaks.
Because of its humble origins and subject matter, Bachata was not popular at first. It was considered vulgar and unrefined, it was music for the poor and uneducated. This, however, didn’t stop the Bachata artists who continued playing and writing songs for their few faithful fans. As the years passed, Bachata music evolved, borrowing styles and rhythms from modern genres like Latin pop. Slowly, songs that were considered vulgar and unrefined got more and more requests on the radio, and started showing on the popularity charts.
Today, Bachata is known worldwide. Music from classic artists like Joan Soriano, Luis Vargas, and Anthony Santos, as well as they modern counterparts like Romeo Santos, Andy Andy, and Prince Royce can be found on Amazon or ITunes.
Just as the music has gained popularity and recognition, the Bachata dance has left the rural countryside of the Dominican Republic to reach places like New York City, Paris, Madrid, Sydney and Tokyo. Renowned dance instructors like ATACA y La Alemana, Troy and Jorjet, and Carlos Cinta have taught hundreds of people how to dance with proper technique and distinct style. Just as the music has evolved, the dance has also changed, making instructors look for new ways to challenge dancers and keeping hem on their toes. The goal of the Reno Winter Bachata is to celebrate Bachata music and dance, by offering workshops that educate dancers on the history and technique, and dance parties where people can practice what they’ve learned.
